Medicare could start to pay for yearly scant to detect for lung cancer in former or current heavy smokers. The CMS released on Monday a long-awaited proposal to start covering early screenings for high-risk enrollees this is if their health care providers agree and they meet the criteria.

Every year lung cancer kills about 160,000 Americans, because tumors are not usually detected early enough to begin treatment. A major study has revealed a low-dose scan of the lungs of those who are at greater risk may cut his or her changes by 20%.

This proposal from Medicare will  be open for public comments for 30 days and a final decision will be made in Feb. 2015.
