What you need to know about 2016 Medicare open enrollment

During 2016 Medicare open enrollment you mat review your current drug and health coverage.

  • If you are enrolled in original Medicare, take a look at 2016 Medicare & You handbook (mailed at the end of 2015) to know your Medicare benefits and costs for the coming year. If you are unsatisfied with your original Medicare coverage, you may make changes during fall open enrollment. Any changes made will take effect January 1st of the following year.
  • If you are enrolled in Medicare Advantage or stand-alone Part D plan, you will receive Evidence of Coverage (EOC) or Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) from your plan. Make sure to review these notices for any changes in your plan’s costs, benefits, and rules for the upcoming year.
  • If you are satisfied with your current Medicare plan, take no action and review other Medicare options in your area, which may better suit your needs in the upcoming year. Research reveals that people with Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D) may lower his or her costs by shopping among different plans each year. For example, another Part D plan within your area may cover medications with less restrictions and will charge less.
